What We Collect

Artifacts must have a clear connection to:

  • South Carolina’s military history (pre-Revolution to 21st century),
    or
  • The state’s role in the broader military history of the United States,
    or
  • The relationship between South Carolina’s military history and its political or cultural development.

How the Donation Process Works

We are grateful for every offer of donation and appreciate your interest in helping preserve South Carolina’s military history. Each potential addition to the collection is carefully reviewed to ensure it can be properly preserved, cared for, and used to support the museum’s mission for future generations.

  1. Complete an Object Donation Form and submit it to the Registrar.
  2. The Registrar will review the information and present the object and its history to the Collections Committee.
  3. If preliminary approval is granted, you will be contacted to schedule an appointment to bring the object to the museum for further evaluation.
  4. During that appointment, museum staff will complete a Temporary Deposit Form and Incoming Condition Report with you.
  5. The Collections Committee will then review the object to determine how it aligns with the museum’s Collections Plan and long-term preservation goals.
  6. You will be notified of the decision.
    1. If accepted, a Deed of Gift will be mailed for signature to formally transfer ownership.
    2. If not accepted, arrangements will be made for return, and we may suggest other institutions that could be interested.
    3. Artifacts or archival donations are tax deductible.

Every artifact, document, photograph, or personal item has the potential to help tell a larger story. We sincerely appreciate your willingness to help preserve these connections to South Carolina’s past.
