Where South Carolina’s Military Story Comes to Life

Founded in 1896, the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum began with a focused mission to preserve memories of the Civil War as understood in its time. Like many institutions created in the late 19th century, its original purpose reflected the era in which it was born.

Today, the museum tells a far broader story.

Now serving as South Carolina’s official military history museum, we explore the full sweep of the state’s military heritage — from the Revolutionary War to modern-day service. What began as a single chapter has grown into a powerful narrative spanning centuries.

Where South Carolina's Military History Comes to Life

Our exhibits explore:

  • The American Revolution
  • The Mexican War
  • The Spanish-American War
  • The Civil War
  • World Wars I and II
  • Vietnam and modern conflicts
  • Military life beyond the battlefield

Through personal letters, uniforms, weapons, photographs, and firsthand accounts, history becomes tangible — and personal.

Because history isn’t just about what happened.

It’s about who lived it.

A Historic Home in Columbia

The museum is located in the Columbia Mills Building, a landmark that opened in 1894 as the world’s first fully electric textile mill. Its soaring brick walls and industrial architecture provide a dramatic setting for the stories inside.

Sharing a campus with the South Carolina State Museum, it’s a natural stop for visitors exploring Columbia’s cultural district.

History here isn’t static.

It’s preserved, explored, and brought to life through exhibitions, educational programs, and conversations that connect past and present.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a student, or a traveler discovering Columbia, you’ll find stories here that inform, challenge, and inspire.
